Historic Spring season for APA's Athlete team and an exciting Summer ahead!

APA’s Athlete team, The North Face Adventure Team, had one of its busiest springs in history with major events in Japan, Africa, China, Malaysia, Spain, Hong Kong and The Philippines. The team had many exciting journeys and explorations, along with several historic performances and course records.

C3fit, the Teams new sock and compression sponsor from Japan, also re-signed and continued its commitment along with long time sponsors THE NORTH FACE, Champion System, Hammer Nutrition, SRAM and Princeton Tec, all helping the team reach new heights.

Other notable news was the signing of the first new team member in several years, John “StingRay” Onifa, a phenomenal talent from a small fishing village on Panay Island in the Philippines. Check out a short video of his amazing story at:

Chung kicked off the spring with a blistering podium finish in the highly competitive 10-year anniversary The North Face 100 event in Beijing (www.thenorthface100.com ) on a course that was shortened from 100km due to weather conditions. Then just a week later Chung remarkably ran off the front of The 4 Deserts (www.4deserts.com ) event of 2018.  He battled for 6 days with a former 4 Desert Series champion from Europe often switching leads on stages or finishing together. Chung ended up 2nd place Overall in just his second desert stage race.

The teams new member, Stingray, more than proved his metal with his first trip to Hong Kong making trail running headlines.  Stingray started by breaking Vlad Ixel’s course record in Action Asia’s annual 20km Tai Lam race (www.actionasiaevents.com)…then soon after incredibly won a 100km race, Rebel Walker (www.rebelwalker.com) , in his first attempt over anything longer than a 50km distance!

Despite his recent focus on trail running, Jay showed his power on the bike has not left him by winning Thailand's prestigious Doi Inthanon Mountain Climb event that every year gets thousands of local and international riders.

Soon after Piers and Ryan won Hong Kong’s new leading navigation team trail race  –namely the Merrel Challenge (www.merrell-challenge.hk). They had an epic battle against Hong Kong’s National Rogaine champions across a highly technical and spectacular course taking in most the best areas of Lamma Island.

The Team’s momentum carried over in Japan at the World Tour’s Ultra Trail Mount Fuji (UTMF - www.ultratrailmtfuji.com)  event in April with Jay racing to a 5th place podium finish against some of the world's top ultra trail runners…and this was Jays first 100 mile event!  Jay ran a super smart race and pulled away from several overseas athletes and Japan’s top 2 runners in the final 20km.  UTMF took in an astounding 8000+ meters of elevation in a course filled with all types of mountain and road running.  In the 100km mens race, named STY, StingRay finished a respectable 5th Overall despite some epic drama when he ran out of food and water,  and Ryan finished 11th Overall while winning the Veteran’s trophy.

Stone’s feature race of the spring was the honor of being selected to be the first Chinese to represent Hong Kong at the ITRA Ultra Trail World Championships (https://itra.run/). The Europe race did not go as hoped for Stone due to some nutrition problems, but competing in Spain for his homeland was a life milestone he will never forget, as well as, great progress for Hong Kong's trail running community and hopefully opening the doors for more support from the local government and running associations.

Summer is now here and things don’t slow down for several team members:

  • Chung and Ryan will be supporting the The North Face-sponsored 65km Force of Nature Ultra in Singapore (http://www.forceofnatureultra.com) on the 7th July.
  • Stone will attempt a new Ultra Trail World Tour event on July 13th in Switzerland, Eiger Ultra Trail (https://www.eigerultratrail.ch/en ).  His preparation is going well and it should be an unforgettable race location and experience for him, along with a major test with the World Tour’s level of competition.
  • Daved takes on one of his big targets of the year in Malaysia on July 29th, the Cameron Ultra 100 (www.cameronultra.com), with the race being billed as the most spectacular Ultra in the country.
  • Ryan will take on several races in the USA, including the Volcanic 50 (https://gobeyondracing.com/races/volcanic-50) a race circumnavigating the iconic Mt. St. Helens volcano.
  • Chung’s Desert Quest resumes as he heads to China for the 7-day Gobi March (www.4deserts.com) on July 29th.
  • Jay will compete in the well-established Thailand Ultra, CM6 (www.cm6.run/en/ )in his backyard of Chiang Mai on August 4th-5th.
